Soulmate IO is a companion and roleplay site run by MGN AI, INC., a Delaware company, that also calls itself Spicy Chat AI in its menus and page titles. Talking to its cast costs nothing and needs no account, while voice, pictures and adult storylines are paid extras. I read its feature tour, roleplay and photo pages and the full legal set today. The cheapest plan opens at $2 for the first month and renews at $19.99.
Two names, one companion studio
The first thing you notice is the naming. The logo, the domain and every legal page say Soulmate or Soulmate IO, while page titles and the main menu say Spicy Chat AI, so do not be surprised to see both. Behind it sits MGN AI, INC., registered at an address in Newark, Delaware. The homepage also carries an invitation to invest in the company, which is an unusual thing to find next to a cast of companions.
The cast is large: the homepage claims more than a thousand companions in three looks, photorealistic, hand-drawn 2D anime and stylised 3D. Every card I saw carried a stated age, from 20 up to 70 on the anime page. The profile I opened listed hobbies, a one-line motto and a daily timetable showing when she sleeps, reads or goes for a walk, and the feature tour says every companion runs on such a schedule. The idea is that you fit into her day, which gives the characters more texture than a static bio.
Building your own and swiping the deck
Custom companions come from a six-step studio covering art style, face, personality, backstory and voice, and you decide whether the result remains yours alone or appears in the public catalogue. The settings page lists the free plan with no custom characters, even though the feature tour says everything can be tried at no cost, and Studio+ raises the limit to ten. The swipe deck, a stack of companion cards where a right swipe makes her open the conversation, is also pitched at Studio+. It is a playful twist on the usual gallery, although it is still a gallery underneath.
Chat, memory and roleplay worlds
No conversation was started for this review; what follows comes from the site's own descriptions. Text chat is free for a first conversation with no sign-up, and the terms add that free users get a limited number of messages before a plan is needed. Memory is the main selling point: companions are said to carry details forward between sessions, and the paid plans extend how much they remember.
Roleplay is organised into eight worlds, including fantasy, sci-fi, historical, supernatural and everyday settings. Each story opens on an illustrated moment, offers suggested branches or a free text box, and saves your place so you can return mid-scene. Any companion can be cast in any world and remembers what happened afterwards. Unpaid accounts get flirtatious stories only. Explicit storylines need a subscription, and the premium scenes are tied to Studio Pro.
Photos, voice and video calls
The photo studio is the most open feature. You describe a scene in plain words, choose any public or custom companion, pick one of five aspect ratios from tall 9:16 to wide 16:9, and the studio keeps her face consistent. The first render costs nothing; after that each picture is paid in G-points, the site's credit, and no subscription is required. Explicit renders need a signed-in adult account and cost more than safe ones. Everything lands in an Assets gallery in full resolution.
Voice is split across tiers: voice messages come with Studio+, real-time voice calls with Studio Pro. Video calls, where the companion moves and answers on camera, are reserved for Studio Max. I could not test any of these, and none of the pages put a G-point price on a photo, a message or a minute, so the running cost of an active month is impossible to judge in advance.
What it really costs
The feature tour is the only page I found with a price list, and every plan uses the same trick: a near-free first month followed by a much higher monthly rate. Studio+ costs $2 for the first month and $19.99 after that, Studio Pro $4 and then $39.99, and Studio Max $8 and then $79.99. The terms say subscriptions renew automatically and mention monthly, quarterly and annual cycles, but only monthly prices are shown. G-point packs are sold separately as one-off top-ups, and their page showed me no prices.
Cancelling is done from the account settings, paid access runs to the end of the cycle and the account then drops back to the free tier, taking any unused tokens with it. Refunds are tighter than most: EU and UK residents keep a 14-day withdrawal right, while everyone else has 24 hours after paying and loses even that once more than 20 tokens are spent. Only card payments qualify, and the site takes cards or other methods depending on your country.
- Free: chat with the public cast, 100 G-points to start, no custom characters
- Studio+: $19.99 a month after a $2 opening month, with the swipe deck, up to 10 custom companions and voice messages
- Studio Pro: $39.99 a month after a $4 opening month, adding premium roleplay scenes and real-time voice calls
- Studio Max: $79.99 a month after an $8 opening month, adding live video calls
- G-points: one-off packs, prices not listed publicly
Privacy, moderation and the fine print
The privacy notice makes one genuinely good promise: chats, pictures and voice come from MGN AI's own models on its own servers, and conversations are not passed to outside AI providers or sold. It lists access, correction, deletion and portability rights, all handled by email, but gives no retention period beyond keeping data as long as needed, and no self-serve delete button is described. The age check is a confirmation prompt, with stronger verification only where local law requires it.
The terms deserve a careful read. You keep ownership of what you type, but you grant the company an irrevocable worldwide licence to reuse your inputs and the replies, including for model training, commercial use and marketing. Flagged chats can be reviewed by staff along with other content on the account, changes to the terms apply the moment they are posted, and disputes go to Delaware courts. The policies also say mature content is for subscribers, yet the public profile I opened shows the explicit titles of thirty generated pictures to anyone, signed in or not. I found no word on how charges appear on a bank statement.
Pros and cons
What works
- Free chat with the public cast, no account needed for a first conversation
- Three art styles, realistic, 2D anime and 3D anime, with stated ages of 20 and over on every card I saw
- Branching roleplay worlds that save progress and feed into the companion's memory
- Photo studio with five aspect ratios that charges per render, no subscription required
- Own AI models, with conversations not passed to outside AI providers
- First months cost just $2 to $8, with a 24-hour refund window (14 days in the EU and UK)
What does not
- Renewals jump to $19.99, $39.99 or $79.99 a month, and video calls need the top plan
- No public prices for G-points or for what a photo, message or call minute costs
- Unused tokens expire when you cancel, and refunds end after 24 hours or 20 tokens
- Broad irrevocable licence over your chats, including use in marketing
- Two brand names, no stated data retention period and no billing descriptor information
Verdict
Soulmate IO has a likeable core: a free way in, companions in three art styles with daily routines, roleplay that feeds into memory and a photo studio you can pay for per picture. The problem is the price ladder. Each plan is almost free for a month and then costs $19.99, $39.99 or $79.99, video calls sit at the very top, and G-point costs are never published. Add the wide licence over your content and thin data-retention detail, and it suits adults who will test the free tier carefully and cancel on time, not anyone looking for a predictable bill.
Our score: 3.3/5
